Neighborhood Meeting Re: North end of 600 Coit Block

February 10, 2023 at 5:30 PM

Join us at 700 Clancy. Potluck led by the Events Committee.

See the design for Union Suites' second project: the north end of the 600 Coit block.

Share your impression of whether it provides what you feel is needed in that area, blends in well with adjacent structures, and what changes it still needs.

The Community Development Committee will determine its rating on the Development Scorecard - including average scores from attendees - and make a recommendation on whether the Board should support it at its meeting Monday February 13.

Petty Crimes - play and talk back

by Kristin Andrea Hanratty

NOBL Talk Back after Final Dress (Wednesday March 1 at 8 pm)
Guest speaker: former board member Robin Benton

Generations and privileges collide in the world premiere of local playwright and attorney Kristin Hanratty’s new play as we’re all asked: if not all people are treated equally by the system, at what point do we need to bend the system, and at what point does it break?

While high-profile trials occupy the nation’s collective consciousness and determine the fate of billionaires, six strangers from Northern Michigan are summoned to serve on the jury for a trial surrounding a Hispanic teenager’s alleged minor misdeeds. In their confined quarters, the group must grapple not only with the case at hand but what it means to be fair and just in a society that is not just or fair to everyone. Is it possible to do what’s “right” when the law is black-and-white, but the world is anything but?

Peer Education Series: Seed Starting

March 11, 2023 at 10:00 AM

Join gardeners from Belknap and Creston at the community room in the Carrier Crest Apartments, 205 Carrier St NE, to start seeds to grow indoors for your spring garden. Thanks to Creston Neighborhood Association for hosting and neighbor Paul Haan for instruction.

Paul notes: People who attend should be ready to make a small investment if they want to try this method. It is NOT a money saver, but if folks do things well, they will get access to a wider variety of plants of their choice and a great sense of satisfaction. You can grow very healthy seedlings at home if you pay attention to some basic details. Much of the failure comes from the gimmicky stuff sold by local stores. Good soil, a little heat, adequate light, and daily attention will get good results.

Off the cuff, after the event folks should be prepared to invest in:

  • A heat mat
  • If they do not have a really good south facing window, a shop light
  • Trays for growing
  • QUALITY soil for planting, as well as soil for repotting as the plants grow
  • Pots for repotting

I can talk about what works best, what short-cuts seem to produce reasonable results, and what I have seen fail.
